Like many people, I came to yoga looking for the physical benefit. After a car accident that resulted in significant loss of strength and mobility in my dominant arm, I was in search of something to help. While it did eventually provide me those benefits, they took a lot of work and persistence through many frustrating hours of practice. However, what kept me coming back was the mental benefit. I had never experienced an “exercise” that left me feeling so much better, beyond just the rush of endorphins.
I got up from yoga feeling like I had been put back together….like all the pieces of me that had been pushed and pulled in all different directions throughout the day were back in place. I felt centered and grounded and like myself. No other exercise provided that for me. PLUS, I was becoming stronger and longer.
I now refer to this as the “yoga high,” because it can manifest in different ways for different people, but it’s always good. Sometimes it’s energizing; other times it’s a release; even other times it is relaxing. This high is also something you can find again and again and can be what motivates you to come back to your mat. It’s not about the poses but about the yoga high, about feeling good.
You deserve to feel better. You deserve to be the best version of yourself.
You deserve yoga.
